General information
The classic grey phenotype in alpacas is a dilution factor that brightens the coat’s base colour. The phenotype is usually the result of a combination of black and white or fawn fibers in the coat, which gives rise to the grey appearance. A dominant mutation in the KIT gene was identified as the causative genetic variant for classic gray. All classic grey alpacas were observed to be heterozygous.
